Thursday July 18 Day 3 Colosseum and Palatine Hill

Today was an easy day as Michael said "we only did one thing". Why did it take all day? LOL
When we arrived at the Colosseum, the line-up was sooo long, We decided to take a guided tour instead {smart call, we got in so much sooner} This ancient amphitheater is huge. This was where the Roman gladiator combats took place. Also animals such as lions or tigers provided entertainment for the people, as the animals fought each other to their death,  the people would cheer them on. Walking around the ruins you could imagine the thousands of people screaming and cheering. Unfortunately human beings were also sacrificed.

We continued our tour to Palatine Hill which was across from the Colosseum. This place is one of the most ancient parts of Rome. It was the center of Rome. We had a lot of stairs to climb, but we managed! I think our bodies are getting used to it. LOL
Here is a small sample of the ruins on Palatine Hill

One of the ancient churches had a cellar which was a holding prison for those waiting to be executed. This is where, it is believed that the apostles St. Peter and St Paul were held prisoners.  Sandy & I went down to see this. It was a winding stairway down to a dark, damp and cold cellar. It had a low ceiling with a round hole in it where the prisoners would be lowered down into the prison and when it was time for their execution they would be raised up through the same hole. The guide showed us a pool of water that apparently miraculously sprang up, which the Saints used to baptize some soldiers who became Christian. I found it to be a solemn and holy place.

On a lighter note, as we walked the Palatine Hill we came across this ancient statue that bears a strong resemblance to someone we know.

This tour was very interesting and so much to see and absorb, I think I'm getting brain-overload.

Another first for us was riding a subway! Sandy & Michael couldn't believe that we had never been on one before. I guess they don't realize they are traveling with 2 old dinosaurs. I found it  little intimidating but fascinating and fun. I liked watching the people too.

There are many small cars in Rome as well as hundreds of scooters. Here are a couple of pictures I think you'll enjoy.

Smart cars will fit in anywhere!

I think this is a good place to say "the end" to another fabulous day! Must get rested up for an early morning.
